Begin with a promise
The opening panels should tell readers what kind of emotional journey they are entering. It can be a mystery, a striking image or a character choice, but it needs to create a question worth following.
Use space as timing
On a vertical canvas, empty space is part of the soundtrack. A larger gap can hold a pause, stretch suspense or give a reveal room to land. The scroll itself becomes an editing tool.
End with momentum
A cliffhanger does not always need danger. A new piece of information, an emotional reversal or an unanswered invitation can be enough. The goal is simple: leave the reader leaning forward.
